Balloon Sinuplasty (Balloon Sinus Dilation)

As board-certified Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists, our physicians are highly trained in the diagnosis and treatment of sinusitis. An exciting new treatment called Balloon Sinuplasty, also known as Balloon Sinus Dilation is now available to treat sinusitis. Dallas ENT Head & Neck Surgery Center is the first practice in Dallas to perform this procedure.

A Breakthrough in Sinus Surgery

Balloon sinuplasty is revolutionizing the treatment of sinusitis. Dr. Pandit was one of the first physicians in the country to perform balloon sinuplasty. Since 2005, ENT doctors throughout the country have used balloon sinus dilation to treat chronic sinusitis in over 150,000 patients. The procedure uses a small, flexible balloon catheter to open inflamed sinus passages to relieve the sinus pain and pressure that is associated with chronic and recurring sinus infections. The balloon catheter is placed into the nose to reach the inflamed sinuses, and then gradually inflated to restructure the previously blocked sinus passages.

The main benefit? Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinus dilation requires no cutting and no removal of bone and tissue, preserving the normal anatomy of the sinuses. Amazingly, for many patients, it can be performed in a doctor’s office, under local anesthesia.

SAFE: More than 150,00 patients have been safely treated to date

PROVEN: Over 95% of patients who have undergone the procedure say they would have it again.

FAST: Recovery times vary among patients, but most patients quickly return to normal activities.

How does it work?

Balloon sinuplasty, also called balloon sinus dilation, catheter-based dilation of sinus ostia or functional endoscopic dilation of the sinuses, is a new device that is guided into the sinuses and used to dilate the sinus openings the same way angioplasty dilates the vessels on the heart.

Balloon sinuplasty involves little to no tissue removal inside the nose and sinuses. At the present time, it is used to open the frontal, maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. Because the technique was recently introduced, surgeons are still learning which patients it will work best for and when it is the appropriate choice of device for surgery. Situations that balloon sinuplasty is usually not appropriate for are cases of large nasal polyps or significant scarring from previous sinus surgery.
